Katharyn Hurd AICP, LEED AP BD+C
Associate / Planner
Katharyn Hurd developed her eye for creativity at a young age when she became interested in art and in exploring the natural world. This is evident in her work as an urban designer, which was her field of study in graduate school. Her interest in art gives her a unique perspective on projects because she can identify design nuances that might have otherwise been overlooked. “This has taught me to seek other perspectives and has revealed issues not immediately apparent, but critical, to come to an optimal solution for any design or planning challenge,” she says.
Katharyn firmly believes that collaboration is an essential key to success, especially in the world of urban design. Her favorite activity is brainstorming ideas with stakeholders, clients, and other professionals to gain inspiration, enthusiasm, and develop creative solutions. She cites a new campus master plan as a favorite project because “it’s exciting to explore innovative and cutting-edge ideas about the 21st century university with a group that is enthusiastic about being better in all ways, especially sustainability,” she says, “It’s a challenging and rewarding puzzle to work through.”
Prior to joining Page, Katharyn was an Urban Design Studio Instructor at Boston Architectural College while also working for her graduate alma mater, Harvard University, as an Urban Designer in the Harvard Planning and Project Management department. Her primary focus at Harvard was master planning for a major expansion in Allston, a neighborhood in Boston across the river from Harvard’s historic Cambridge campus. Prior to that, Katharyn completed her undergraduate studies in landscape architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and then gained experience working on public projects for cities.
Outside of the office, Katharyn sustains her creativity through drawing, painting, and creating ceramics. She also enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, running, and yoga as a way to establish a healthy balance in her life.
