Herman Ellis Dyal FAIA

Principal / Creative Director

Herman Dyal has had a fascination with architecture and its relationship to the graphic arts since his days as an undergraduate at the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin. In fact, it was unclear to him for a long time whether he wanted to pursue a career in graphic design or in architecture. Ultimately, he found a way to combine both, while adding branding to the mix.

Herman is a classically trained design architect who received a Masters of Architecture from Tulane University, and his early career included design positions at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), and the prestigious New York office of Philip Johnson and John Burgee Architects. At both offices he specialized in the design of high rise structures. He saw an opportunity to create a practice that worked at the intersection of architecture, graphic design, branding, and wayfinding – expanding the nature of services in the field of architecture – which prompted him to set out on his own. As a young professional he was intimately involved in the Rice Design Alliance (Houston), where he served on the Board, was the first art director of Cite magazine, and designed countless posters and promotional materials for lecture series and other events.
